Just a few days left to Sunday 1st July and the 2018 edition of Assietta Legend, starting from and finishing at the 2,035m altitude of Colle del Sestriere, following a spectacular route along the summits of the Unione Montana Comuni Olimpici Via Lattea. A special edition this, as the 93km Marathon Legend has been fully acknowledged as a valid trial for the Italian Championships. Further recognition of the excellent work consistently undertaken over the years and the professionalism shown by the Assietta Legend Organising Committee which has always paid the utmost attention to every detail of all technical trials.
The Assietta Legend offers a full immersion for mountain bike enthusiasts: Saturday 30th June at 4pm will see the Baby Cup; on Sunday 1st July the 93km Marathon Legend will start at 8:30am, while the 20km XCM Adventure Italian Championship will start at 9:15am and the 58km Assietta Bike will start at 10am.
Kicking off the event will be the Baby Cup, a promotional mini field event running alongside the Strada Azzuri d'Italia (next to the Sports Centre). The Baby Cup is open to younger riders aged between 7 to 12 years: participants can enrol onsite from 3pm and the first race will start at 4pm.
On Sunday 1st July, the 93km Marathon Legend for FCI members and counting towards the Italian title will start at 8:30am. Following a departure from “Colle”, the route will pass through Sestriere Borgata, Pragelato, Val Troncea, Laval, the Mendia route, Pourrieres di Usseaux, Balboutet, Pian dell'Alpe, Colle delle Finestre, Cima Ciantiplagna, the Gran Serin fort, the Colle and Testa of Assietta, the Lauson and Blegier hills, Mount Genevris, the Costa Piana, Bourget and Basset hills and Mount Fraiteve, from where the descent towards the finish line passes along the Gelindo Bordin. Foreign athletes and sports promotion organisation members will start at 9am. The participants of the 20 km Cycle Tourism Adventure will start at 9:15 while the 58km Assietta Bike Granfondo will start at 10am. The prize-giving ceremony will take place at 3:30pm at the Sestriere Sports Centre. All info can be found on the website www.assiettalegend.it
This event is the result of the hard work by the Servizio Viabilità della Città Metropolitana (on S.P. 173) and the Organising Committee together with the staff of the Vialattea (on the military road of Cima Ciantiplagna and on that which leads to Fraiteve at 2,700 metres above sea level) who have removed the still-abundant blanket of snow and repaired the route of its rain damage that occurred during the wet spring months.
But that’s not all… after the Assietta Legend, the Organising Committee will take on yet another great challenge: the Granfondo Sestriere Colle delle Finestre on 22nd July. Long-awaited by cycling enthusiasts, this event will draw cyclists again less than two month later to brave the climb of the Colle delle Finestre, the “Cima Coppi” of the Giro d'Italia 2018. An epic stage during which Chris Froome revolutionised the pink jersey rankings flying through the bends and unpaved hairpin turns of the Colle delle Finestre and overcoming the Colle del Sestriere in first place.
