The Vialattea territory is surrounded by three nature parks: Orsiera Rocciavré, Val Troncea and Gran Bosco di Salbertrand, which together with the Avigliana Lakes, 2 Nature Reserves and as many as 16 Natura 2000 Network sites constitute the Protected Areas of the Cottian Alps. The management of these areas is not limited to safeguarding typical alpine environments, but is also aimed at protecting a heritage of inestimable historical and cultural value. Along the trails we encounter ancient military roads, majestic fortifications, historical monuments, mines and icehouses. Valuable witnesses of local history that we also find alive and present in the traditions, customs and traditions of the inhabitants of the alpine localities of Vialattea.

 

 

ORSIERA ROCCIAVRE'

NATURAL PARK

Orsiera Rocciavrè Nature Park covers a large alpine area in western Piedmont between the Cottian and Graian Alps, more precisely between the Susa and Chisone valleys. The highest peak in the park is Mount Orsiera (2,890 m), which, together with Mount Rocciavrè, gives the park its name. The Colle delle Finestre, a historic alpine pass, at 2,176 m connects the Susa Valley to the Chisone Valley, offering views of rare beauty.

GRAN BOSCO DI SALBERTRAND

NATURAL PARK

The Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Nature Park, located on the orographic right of the Susa Valley from the valley floor to the mountain peaks bordering the Chisone Valley, preserves a mixed forest of white and red spruce that is quite rare in the Alps. The protected area is crossed by a dense network of hiking trails, including internationally important routes such as the Via Francigena, the “Grande Traversata delle Alpi,” and the panoramic Assietta military road.

VAL TRONCEA

NATURAL PARK

The Val Troncea Nature Park covers an area of 3280 hectares at the head of the catchment basin of the Chisone River, whose waters take their sources from the Barifreddo and Appenna Mountains. The Park is bordered by 3000m peaks and insists entirely on the Municipality of Pragelato. Above the forests opens up the fabulous world of alpine flowers, which have given the valley the appellation “Valle dei Fiori”.

FAUNA
AND FLORA

The natural parks of the Cottian Alps preserve a wild environment that is home of a wide variety of fauna and flora. The fauna consists of chamois, ibex, deer, golden eagles, peregrine falcons, marmots, wolves and foxes. Concerning the flora, Broadleaf trees are common in the valley floor, while from 1300 m the coniferous kingdom takes over. Above the forests, finally, the world of alpine flora opens up, well represented by edelweiss, violets, blueberry, gentian, artemisia genepi, and thyme serpyllum.

The parks of the Cottian Alps, in pursuit of the goals of protection and management of natural environments that constitute habitats necessary for the conservation and enrichment of biodiversity, are committed to the promotion of agro-silvo-pastoral activities and typical local products. In the three parks, insisting on the Vialattea territory, the practices of mountain pasture and traditional cheese-making are well preserved, which gives an intensity of scents and aromas derived from fresh grass and mountain flowers.

The Park Authority promotes gastronomic productions of excellence through the Piedmont Region’s “Parchi da Gustare” project and through the “Formaggio Tipico Parchi Alpi Cozie” brand.
