One year after the historic achievement on the Kandahar G.A. Agnelli slope, the Sestriere Ski World Cup Organizing Committee and the Municipality of Sestriere have unveiled a sculpture dedicated to the extraordinary milestone reached by the American champion, who at Colle, in the Vialattea, broke the barrier of 100 Alpine Ski World Cup victories.
SESTRIERE (TO) – February 23, 2025 is a date forever etched in the history of alpine skiing. On that day, between the slalom gates in Sestriere, Mikaela Shiffrin claimed her 100th FIS World Cup victory, setting a legendary record on the slopes of the Vialattea.
Today, Sunday, March 29, just over a year after that “roar” that shook the Olympic Kandahar G.A. Agnelli slope, Sestriere has made that moment eternal through the lens of art.
The Sestriere Ski World Cup Organizing Committee, in close collaboration with the athlete’s team, commissioned internationally renowned artist Maurizio Perron to create a celebratory work.
“An indescribable emotion,” recalls Gualtiero Brasso, President of the Organizing Committee, “seeing Mikaela triumph here with us was a thrilling moment, something truly special. It was the icing on the cake at the end of three days of Alpine Ski World Cup races in Sestriere, in front of a wonderful crowd. We had to leave a tangible legacy, a lasting mark of this achievement. Thanks to Mikaela and her team’s availability, together with Maurizio Perron’s talent, that emotion has become a work of art that will remain forever at Colle and which today, with great pleasure, on behalf of the Sporting Club Sestrieres, I am proud to donate to the Municipality.”
“Another jewel is added to the history of Sestriere,” said the Mayor of Sestriere, Gianni Poncet, “increasingly a mountain of sport and great champions. Mikaela Shiffrin’s achievement could not remain just a statistic; it had to become something more meaningful. Gualtiero Brasso’s idea to immortalize the milestone of 100 Alpine Ski World Cup victories here in Sestriere through a work of art was the best way to achieve this goal. We are proud and honored to have been the stage for another page in skiing history written in Sestriere.”
The artwork is made of stainless steel to withstand harsh weather conditions and temperature fluctuations at Sestriere’s 2,035 meters of altitude. The surface has been satin-finished to make it more vibrant and to give texture and character to the steel. The concept is as simple as it is instinctive: it depicts the number 100 supported by two crossed skis, along with the inscription “MIK.” The central zero is also distinctive, inspired by the stylized shape of the FIS Crystal Globe.
The sculpture is currently on display at the Sestriere Tourist Office and will be installed this summer on a large rock, positioned so that the Kandahar G.A. Agnelli slope forms its backdrop.
