SESTRIERE AND THE SKI WORLD CUP

Sestriere represents a major location for the White Circus since the arbors of alpine skiing. Important international competitions have been held on the snows of Sestriere, such as the Arlberg-Kandahar, dating back to the early 1950s, which saw the pioneers of alpine skiing compete. The evolution of skiing has led Sestriere and Vialattea to be one of the ski areas that hosted the largest number of World Cup races since the origin of the prestigious FIS race circuit.

ABOUT PASSION

Sestriere had the honor of hosting one of the first Ski World Cup races, back in 1967, with France’s Jean Claude Killy winning the men’s downhill on the legendary Kandahar Banchetta slope, while, Giustina Demetz and Marielle Goitschel finished tied on the top step of the podium in the women’s. In its long competitive history, Sestriere, has organized no less than 67 World Cup races (30 men’s and 37 women’s) to which must be added the 1997 World Ski Championships and the XX Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Turin 2006.

More than half a century of history during which the world’s greatest champions have competed on the snows of the Vialattea. Among them Alberto Tomba, a 6-time winner in Sestriere, was an undisputed protagonist of the scene from 1987 to 1994. It was Tomba himself who dominated at in Sestriere, in 1994, in the first ever FIS World Cup night slalom.

SESTRIERE 2025

The world’s top athletes returned to race on the Olympic slopes of Sestriere from February 21 to 23, 2025. It was an unforgettable weekend in Vialattea, featuring three thrilling races as part of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup, offering unforgettable excitement for all fans. The Kandahar Giovanni Alberto Agnelli slope showcased the remarkable skills of two extraordinary champions: Federica Brignone, who achieved a double victory in Giant Slalom, further solidifying her position as the leader in the overall standings, and Mikaela Shiffrin, who, on the snow of Vialattea, claimed her 100th World Cup victory. No skier has ever reached triple-digit wins in this prestigious competition. The event also set a record for attendance, with over 33,000 spectators attending across the three days. There was a great turnout at the sponsor village and Piazza Fraiteve, where the 2025 Giro d’Italia presentation took place, alongside the announcement of the queen stage, the Verrès-Colle delle Finestre – Sestriere (Vialattea), which will be the penultimate stage, scheduled for May 31.
