Doriane Escane wins again

09 January 2024

More snow on the slopes of the Vialattea ski area and yet another day of high-level competitiveness. It ended today, Tuesday, January 9, the two-day FIS European Cup Women’s Alpine Skiing, the highlight event of the 2023/2024 ski season that drew to the slopes of Sestriere the deserving athletes who have been summoned to participate in the prestigious continental event.

On this second day of competition, adverse weather conditions forced the jury to lower the start of the Giant Slalom, held along the Kandahar Giovanni Alberto Agnelli slope, the classic of the major sporting events hosted at the Sestriere Hill.

Despite the shorter course, France’s Doriane Escane repeated yesterday’s success and again climbed to the top step of the podium with a total time of 1:45.77 and a 41-cent lead over Austria’s Nina Astner (third yesterday).

An excellent race for the Italian colors, on the podium with the third total time the Tarvisian Lara Della Mea, best of the Italians also yesterday, followed by her team campaign, Merano’s Elisa Platino. In the top ten were the two athletes of the Centro Sportivo Carabinieri, Ilaria Ghisalberti, eighth, and Asja Zenere, ninth.

Also in the spotlight was the very young Valle d’Aosta athlete Giorgia Collomb, class of 2006, who was also awarded yesterday as the best Under 18 Aspirant; she set the best time in the second run and recovered as many as 18 positions, closing her race in 12th place.

It is an honor for the Sporting Club Sestrieres to organize high-level international events – commented at the end of the event Gualtiero Brasso, head of the Sporting Club Sestrieres Organizing Committee – and this two days of European Cup races represented an important stage in the competitive scene of the Vialattea. Now the gaze is already turned to the future as we await the officialdom of the next edition of the World Cup, scheduled to take place in Sestriere in February 2025.
